First Is the Servant | Lemuel Ayudtud

The servant is the winner. That’s it. Plain and simple. In the things of God and of this world, it’s always the servant that wins at the end. Consider the business that are flourishing around us or the people that are making huge differences: these entities and persons are about serving others. We can dare say that if you want to make money or make changes, the only way to do it big is to have a heart of a servant.

In the hierarchy of God, and apparently in the laws of nature, it’s the servant that actually wins. Society might give us a different take on it. It may say it’s the one that pulls people down, or the one that just crushes their competition, or it’s the person that is climbing up to the top that wins; but the real winners are those who are sacrificing for others.

In fact if you want to make history, you have to serve. Think about it: we have light today because Edison worked hard, all his life, to find a solution that would bring light to every home. Consider even Henry Ford, he wanted to help people go from one place to another through the automobile. Think about Jonas Salk who spent his life seeking for an answer for polio. And, of course, the greatest inventor of all, God Himself, created the moon the stars and the earth in order to serve mankind.

Serving, that’s God’s delight. Yet, we clamor to be served. We want others to serve us. We want to be on the throne, much like James and John, with others looking at us and venerating us, serving us. Yet, the joy of God is to see others be like Him. Isaiah the prophet said that God dwells with the lowly and the contrite. God loves the humble. He dwells with them. The Spirit of God is on those that are serving. That’s the call of every believer. We find our value and our gifting in our serving.

Lord, give me a heart to serve You and others. Extend me the grace to see that coming first in Your Kingdom means serving others. Teach me to embrace the humble spirit. Help me to resist the lusts to try to beat others so that I can be on top. Help me, Lord Jesus, reflect You when I serve others. In Your Name, Jesus, I pray, amen.
