Can The Real Jesus Stand Up, Please?

God loves justice and is appalled about injustice. As Jesus Follower, I have to reject a “Christ” that does not reflect the Jesus of the Bible—the God that left His glory, robed Himself in the flesh, humbled Himself to reach people—the broken, the disenfranchised, the lowly, the displaced, the ostracized, the marginalized, the beaten, and the abused. He is the ultimately authority, but became meek to dwell with the powerless.

For those who may not know, the Jesus of the Bible sought out the Samaritan (a racial group hated by Jews at that time) woman. He healed the Syrophoenician woman’s daughter. He sent Peter to a Roman centurion’s household. In essence, He went and spoke to those who were not His own race to reconcile them to Himself because He loved them equally. His parables spoke of the Good Samaritan, the lost coin, and the lost sheep. My Jesus leaves the 99 to look for the one.

Isaiah said the Messiah would come because no one else was standing for justice. That Jesus would come because God was appalled that there was no intercessor—so His own Arm brought it. Jesus is the God of those who face injustice. He is the God of those who face undue violence.

He is the God of the persecuted. He is the God of those who have been oppressed. He is the one who dwells with the lowly, the forgotten and the forsaken. He experienced their pain. He cried out: Father, why have you forsaken me? I want to invite everyone and anyone to know the Jesus of the Bible, because He is for you!

In light of our current social condition: the weight of injustice has been heavily upon our black brothers and sisters for decades and centuries. The real Jesus would stand up to the cause of justice for the Black community. The Jesus I know would rally to their cause because He has done so already at the Cross!
